The engraved brass plaque mounted to the church roof reads " Presented to Superintendent John Peerless on his retirement from the East Sussex Constabulary by the Magistrates the Uckfield and Mark Cross Benches in whose division he has passed the last of his 39 years faithful service May 1886"
