Victorian Walnut Writing Box with Mother of Pearl Crested Decoration

Measures 35 x 23 x 15 cm

Offered for sale an English Victorian writing box. Walnut case with mother of pearl crested inlay to the top and  matching inlaid escutcheon plate to the front. Opens to reveal writing slope. Original faded purple material writing surface with tooled leather surround. Ebonized within. Compartments for inkwells & pens. Old label to the underside of a compartment reads "R.Gee Bookseller Charles Street Launceston". The writing surface lifts up to reveal storage space below for papers.

Sound structural condition with firm hinges. Substantial crack to the back of the lid of the box. Fading & some water damage to the walnut. Mother of pearl inlay good. Writing surface within original, substantial fading. To the base is a crack, only visible when the surface is lifted. The base with a green baize lining.

Purchased from a collection in a Worcestershire manor house.
