We are pleased to offer for sale a handsome antique portrait by the Royal portrait artist Peter Edward Stroehling.
The painting is of Charles Stanhope, 4th Earl of Harrington (1780-1851), styled Viscount Petersham.
The subject is seated in a half-turned stance wearing a white lace collar with a gold necklace and dark velvet tunic. The eyes stare defiantly at the viewer.
Stroehling painted portraits and historical figures, as well as being a skilled miniaturist. His work carried him through the royal and noble families of Europe, especially in France, Germany, Russia and England. In his later years he settled in London, where he found prosperity and acclaim.
